Chapter 8

Shaun closed the door to his room, the quantity of bright green cocktails he’d consumed messing with his equilibrium. He made it to the bed and sprawled onto the white covers. Didn’t matter that he had drunk enough cocktails to take the edge off, he was still way past irritated with Connor freaking confusing French and he needed ten minutes to get his head straight.

The man had only stayed for food then excused himself with a headache. A headache, for fuck’s sake. Anyone with half a brain saw it for what the excuse was and that was avoidance. They’d chatted sensibly for a while; Shaun about his writing and Connor about whatever it was he did for the French Foundation. Adam and Scott, along with Dylan, talked and kept the conversation going. Of course, Scott supplied the cocktails which tasted just like a drink on a tropical island should; ever so slightly coconutty and a whole lot rummish. Coconutty and rummish were definitely words.

Sighing, he flopped over on his back and lay spread-eagled under the lazily moving ceiling fan. He knew it was his fault Connor had disappeared. In fact, he’d known the very second he’d crossed the line with the other man, who to be fair was sitting and talking in a very civilized fashion. The question had been bubbling away inside Shaun since he’d first met Connor. If anything, it had been there longer than that. But yeah, vocalizing his question had caused Connor’s eyes to narrow and his affable I’ll-talk-to-anyone expression to be replaced with anger.

Clearly your heart is dead if you don’t believe in love.

“I should have kept my mouth shut,” he said to the empty room. The words mocked him. Yes, you should have, his conscience replied. Connor hadn’t said he didn’t believe in love, just that there was no need to pull up Alfie and Peter’s love. Shaun was on edge about this whole thing; the project was his baby, and Alfie was his family.

The knock on the door was loud and sudden and startled the shit out of Shaun. He sat bolt upright in his bed and wished he hadn’t when the room spun. What the hell?

“Hey? Are you back yet?”

Shaun groaned. Connor was at his door. Connor with his come-to-bed brown eyes, and his tight ass, and his thighs all solid and his lips that kissable side of plump. Outside Shaun’s damn door.

“What do you want?” Shaun asked. At least Connor’s knocking and the subsequent shock cleared his head a little.

“Shaun?”

“Connor, go away.”

“I want to talk.”

“It’s midnight.”

“This can't wait.”

“Yes, it can.”

“No, it can't.”

Jesus.

Shaun swung his legs and pushed to stand. Clearly Connor wasn’t listening to him shouting through the door, so face-to-face it had to be. Squaring his shoulders, he crossed to the door, which was no more than a few steps away, and threw it open with a flourish.

“What?” he asked. He was aiming for a tone of exasperation, but the sight of Connor standing on his threshold looking disheveled and tired was enough for the ‘what’ to come out soft and tired.
